BBQ Safety & Cleaning

General

  • It's common sense, but remember to check fire restrictions or bans
  • Don't cook right next to something that can catch fire
  • Don’t let kids play chasings around a screaming hot barbie
  • Have a bit more protection than your budgie smugglers and thongs when you’re dealing with sizzling meat

Gas cylinders

  • There are plenty of urban myths about gas cylinders.
  • If you swap your cylinder regularly and use reputable brands, you’re a long way ahead. Why would you trust an unknown brand of cylinders?
  • If you still re-fill your cylinder, by law, you need to have it tested every ten years.
  • Never refill dented or corroded cylinders that may be weakened and make sure that cylinders are not over re-filled.
  • When you purchase a cylinder from a retailer, make sure it complies with Australian Standards.
  • And it’s not rocket science, but don’t fiddle with the valves, or try to repair cylinders with grinders, drills or, heaven forbid, by welding them.
  • When you’re finished barbecueing, turn off the cylinder valve while the barbie is still turned on, then turn off the barbecue controls. This way you clear the gas out of the hose. And its worth regularly checking for cracks or cuts in the hose.

Cleaning your barbie -1

  • Warm your plates on very low heat and scrape away any remaining food, then wipe off the excess oils and fats with kitchen towel.

Cleaning your barbie - 2

  • Then attack it with hot soapy water and a stiff brush or sponge scourer if you have stainless steel.

Cleaning your barbie - 3

  • Remove the soapy water with a damp cloth then wipe the surfaces clean with a dry cloth.

Cleaning your barbie - 4

  • Finally, wipe a little vegetable oil, but not olive oil over the surfaces with a dry cloth.
  • You should also check your burners, cleaning and unblocking them if necessary.
