Only in Australia would you find the words "barbecue" and "culture" in the same phrase, but the barbecue is an intrinsic part of Australian culture. There is nothing more quintessentially Australian as steak sizzling on the barbecue while a tennis ball belts into the garbage bin and another wicket falls in backyard cricket.
The Australian barbecue is so much more than it used to be. "Sophisticated" is not a word that should ever be used in the same sentence as "barbecue", but we shouldn't be embarrassed about taking pride in cooking well or enjoying a wide range of recipes from countries all around the world.
Happily we've come a long way from burnt bangers on white bread.
